MFO Shoe Series: Samantha Sotto, Paranaque

Samantha Sotto needs no introduction. She's been interviewed on TV, in magazines, newspapers and blogs, she's probably a household name in book loving households by now. In fact, most of you have probably read and have been enthralled by her novel, Before Ever After, like I have. But this feature is not about her writing, or her book. Today, we talk to Samantha about her shoes! But of course, without first asking, "What shoes where you wearing when you wrote your book?"

Sam's answer: I mostly wore my Chucks while writing Before Ever After since the table I was writing at Starbucks was beneath the airconditioning vent. It was too cold to wear flipflops! Haha!

As for the shoes she wore while backpacking around Europe? Sam shares, "Sadly, the EU backpacking shoes are long gone. R.I.P., brown Naturalizer sandals..."

Sam initially hesitated to bare her sole, saying her collection of shoes weren't exactly feature worthy. But I begged to differ. I for one want to know what sort of shoes a famous author wears on a daily basis. And I am pretty sure, there are many aspiring writers as well who'd want to be in her shoes!

Sam's "Dang-why-don't-we-have-autumn-in-Manila" shoes

How many pairs of shoes do you own?

25. This is the most I've ever owned. I used to just keep an inventory of four shoes: one black heel, one brown heel, a pair of blue Chucks, and one neutral sandal. One time when I was at work, the strap of my shoe broke and I had to staple it together. That was wakeup call to treat my feet better. Haha!

What's your shoe size?

6 1/2 - 7

Which pairs are your favorites?

1.) Everyday mommy shoe: Tan Aerosole flipflop

2.) Travel shoe: Tan Tod's slip on (It makes going through airport security a breeze. It also makes it easy to stuff my feet back into my shoes while I'm wearing airline socks and need to use the restroom.)

3.) I-need-to-look-like-a-grown-up-shoe: Aldo nude 5 inch heel

If you could only wear one pair of shoes, which one would it be?

My Bass nude wedge. It's as comfortable as a flip flop and goes with everything.

What are your favorite shoe brands?

Bass, Aerosoles, Rockport, Naturalizer, and Colehaan. Notice a pattern here? I'm definitely a manang when it comes to footwear. Comfort comes first. If I need a pair of ten-minute heels for an event, I'll run over to Charles and Keith or Aldo.

What's in your shoe lust list?

A red pair of Chucks.

Where do you buy shoes?

Outlet shops. There's nothing like a great discount to make a shoe feel more comfortable ;-)

What's that one shoe you can't bear to give away or throw out?

My blue pair of Chucks. They're ratty and old but we've been through a lot together.

MFO Shoe Series: Trina Villanueva, Los Angeles

I know, I know, it has been awhile since I've updated my shoe series. I feel bad whenever you guys tell me how much you love the series, then here I am not religiously doing it as I should. Eeeee! Zo zorry! But I promise to make up for it!

Today, I would like you to meet my sister Trina, who is a banker by day, and Bacardi by night. Just kidding. She's a beach bum/snow bunny on the weekends, which is doable if you live in California. Unlike me, she's the outdoorsy type. She may have a bit of the bohemian spirit in her, yet she's quite the practical shopper, scouring discount retailers and always shopping for the best deals.

While she does invest on Loeffler Randall boots, most of the shoes in her closet are sturdy, reasonably priced and are guaranteed classics. But of course, she also makes room for a couple of unconventional choices.

Work days: Pumps in all shades of neutral, from Cole Haan, Nine West, Bandolino

Weekends: Superga, TOMS and Asics

How many pairs of shoes do you own?

30+ right now and except for 1 pair they're all less than 3yrs old. I had to throw away old faves whenever I move houses so I try not to get attached.

What's your shoe size?

US 7.5, 8, 8.5

Which pairs are your favorites?

That's tough. but, My fave is easily my Diesel Aynis (top row, second from left).

Top 2 would be the Ivy by Loeffler Randall (top row, 1st on left).

Loved it so much that I got the over the knee Riley as well.

If you could only wear one pair of shoes, which one would it be?

Ok, when it comes to wearing just 1 shoe, well it all depends on the purpose... Like for work, I like my Cole Haan Air peep toe pumps. I have a bunch of office shoes but I always go to this one.

I used to love my Cole Haan Air Violet wingtips but it's hot in LA and I like my feet to breathe! Now if I weren't working, I'm happy with any of my flip-flops.

What are your favorite shoe brands?

Loeffler Randall is an easy fave, Cole Haan Air for work, DVF has some really comfy stilettos in buttery kid leather, I guess I don't pay attention to the brands so much. I browse based on looks then I decide based on comfort then lastly price. But comfort is my priority and I've noticed most expensive shoes are worth their price.

What's in your shoe lust list?

Hmmm, Chanel flats would be nice as they're so comfy. I've always loved the collections at Chloe. I suppose a Stavros Melissinos haute sandals should be in every girl's closet

Where do you buy shoes?

Online!!! I hate to pay full price so i do wait for sales at department stores. I also love the outlets, Nordstrom Rack, DSW, Neiman Marcus Last Call, Saks Off Fifth, even Marshalls or TJ Maxx! I really love collections featured at Anthropologie and Madewell.

Quirky types: Biviel shoes spotted in an Anthropologie catalog, Zara TRF lace up mary janes

What's that one shoe you can't bear to give away or throw out?

My plum Diesel Aynis. That colour was exclusive to London and I always get compliments on it. I used to wear a lot of black so it perks my wardrobe a little. But the reason why I can't throw it out is because we have a long history. I bought it at the Covent Garden flagship store to cheer myself up and I wore it everywhere. I have memories of hitting the London tube alarm then having to walk from Covent Garden to Russell Square in it because of the bomb scare; walking the snowy streets in SoHo in NY looking for another pair of winter boots; dancing at Orchard Towers with my friend Camille in Singapore; walking up and down the hills of San Francisco with my husband Jun... I just have so many fun travel memories with it. It has lots of character. I'm sure you can relate how shoes can transform a person...

Singapore Shopping: Bimba y Lola

I blame it on Alexa Chung. I first heard about Bimba & Lola (or Bimba y Lola) from her. And well, you know, whatever Alexa likes, Tintin likes too! (Copycat!) When I found out that Bimba y Lola had a store in Singapore, I knew I just had to check it out, yo! One of the incentives for moving here, I thought. Good thing when we got here, our serviced apartment was super near ION Orchard, which meant I could always stop by and visit. I love the dresses, love the shoes, totally could see each piece on Alexa. It's really "her".

But it can be a bit pricey. Like a top is about S$260 and shoes are S$300ish. A little duffel bag that Berry got was S$135. I just had to get it for her. When she saw it on display, she just ran for it and hooked her arm on the handle and wouldn't let go! The SA made her choose between brown and pink, and she got her first choice, the brown one! Such a classic,  grown-up color! Even the SA was amused!

But because I have been on saving mode, I have avoided the store. To keep away from temptation, you know. When my friend Ivy and her sister Mizel came to visit, lagot! I just had to show this to them, because everything in here is love! And they were on sale too! 30 to 50% OFF! Wah! Double lagot! And you know what, when we got in, the SA recognized Berry! Why? Because Berry ran for the orange version of her brown duffel bag! "She really loves that style", the SA said.

While Ivy was trying on shoes, Berry helped herself to a pair. Can you guess which one here?

Yes, she chose the pair that was like the shoe version of her outfit that day! This girl is THE CUTENESS!

Ayan tuloy, because they were so sweet with Berry and let her try on shoes and play with the accessories, I thought I had to buy something (sus, kunwari pa ako, excuses excuses!). Presenting my Bimba y Lola oxfords at 40% OFF!

Berry and I are matching again! Goodbye Dieppa Restrepos!

Now, my oxfords collection is complete. I think.

From L to R: Cole, Rood & Haan, Rag & Bone, Bimba & Lola (heeeeyyyy, what's with the & & &)
