H&M Takes Sustainable Fashion Seriously

Hey, if you've been doing Konmari and you find yourself with bags and bags of clothes and linens that do not spark joy, you might want to consider bringing your unwanted and unloved garments, towels, old sheets and such to H&M.

Yes, that sock missing the other pair, that hole-y shirt, that 20 year old dress that nobody wants, whatever brand, whatever condition, they're all welcome.

In case you didn't know, H&M has been running a Garment Collection program worldwide, and in the Philippines, they've already collected 9.120 tons of garments as of January 2016, where for every kilo collected, H&M Philippines donates about Php1 to UNICEF.

Of course, you get something too. As part of H&M's World Recycle Week activity, from April 11-24, every bag of old garments collected brought to your favorite H&M store will entitle you to 2 vouchers (instead of the usual 1) worth 15% off each to be used for your next purchase.

That said, it's great for the environment too. By collecting old clothing, H&M ensures less garments go to landfills. Two years ago, H&M also introduced its first new garments that used recycled textile fibers, important steps in closing the loop in fashion.

The long-term goal is to have zero garments going to landfill, as well as saving on natural resources. By recycling just one T-shirt 2100 litres of water can be saved – imagine the impact of 1000 tons garments collected during World Recycle Week.

Close the Loop is a central commitment of H&M’s Conscious Actions for sustainability. The aim is to create a closed loop for textiles, so that unwanted clothes can be reused and recycled to create fresh textile fibers for new products.

I managed a quick chat with Fredrik Famm, H&M Philippines Country Manager, to talk about their sustainability efforts, and I'm sharing what I've discovered here with you.

Berry & I, with H&M Philippines Country Manager, Fredrik Famm at the #HMClosetheLoop event at Kidzania, where kids are taught how to strive for a greener world

MFO: I'm curious, what happens to the clothes collected from the garment collecting activity? Where do the clothes go? How does it work?

Fredrik: This is something that we started back in 2013. We are the first fashion retailer which has  started a global initiative for collecting unwanted garments in all our stores. We work together with a global recycling company, and they are helping us to to then recycle everything in the best possible way.

There's obviously different stages in that process. After the garments have been collected in our stores, these are then sent to a sorting facility, and there are a few sorting facilities around the world.

In these sorting facilities, you basically make up your mind if you can re-wear the garment as second hand clothes, or if you can re-use for some other purpose like cleaning cloth or for insulation in car seats for example. Or if that's not possible, we are now working on techniques to recycle the garment into yarn that you can use for producing new garments. So basically, to close the loop altogether.

Here's how it works:

MFO: Normally, when you think recycled or sustainable, you think of it as wearing you know, rough kind of  fabrics. For Conscious Exclusive, is that a conscious mindset as well to veer away from the look of what's "green" and "recycled". Was that a way to change the mindset?

The Moreau dress made out of pure, organic silk. The pants are made out of Tencel and silk.

Fredrik: I would say that in a way, yes. I think there's a perception among many of our customers that garments made out of more sustainable materials are a bit more boring, maybe not so fashionable, and we strongly disagree. We really want to show that with more sustainable materials, you can still make state-of-the art fashion garments. That's why we decided to do a red carpet collection that you can really wear for special occasions.

This is absolutely the latest when it comes to sustainable materials. This year for example, in the collection that we recently launched, we have two brand new sustainable materials. One which we call Denimite, which is  denim that has been recycled into a very hard substance that you can use in earrings for example.

We also have recycled glass beads. In every year's Conscious Exclusive Collection, we try to work with the latest, more sustainable materials.
The embellishments in this Philotes dress are made from new & recycled glass beads and new & conscious rhinestones

In a way yeah, we try to show the customer that sustainability can really be fashionable.

MFO: How does that impact your price points given that there's an extra effort to use sustainable and organic materials vs using cheaper materials.

Fredrik: We've been doing this now for quite a number of years, and our firm belief, and our learning is that garments made out of more sustainable materials doesn't necessarily have to be more expensive.

We can talk separately about Conscious Exclusive, as I mentioned these are garments made for the  red carpet,  in very special materials and with the very latest in sustainable  materials. But in our stores, on an everyday basis, we have a lot of garments made from sustainable materials, for example, organic cotton, organic linen, and recycled polyester, etc. We have that in our stores, in all departments: in kids, in ladies, mens, in the teenage department.

These garments  are for everyday use and they are priced more or less in the same level as our normal collections. So the vast majority of the more sustainable products you find at H&M are exactly at the same price points as the rest of the collections.

MFO: How do you manage to bring down the price to a more affordable level?

Fredrik: I think it comes back to how we work: an efficient logistics chain, we are buying in large quantities, we have a very cost conscious mentality within the company.  This is obviously a system that we have been working on for many years, sourcing from the right suppliers at the right time, in the right way, you can of course offer very competitive price points.

MFO: Well, I personally can see that commitment to value as well as quality. I have clothes from H&M from 10 years ago that still look nice up to now.

Fredrik: H&M is fashion and quality at the best price in a sustainable way.  We put a lot of pride in also making garments that should be able to last, that you should be able to wear many times.

Dan Mejia: Would you believe that even the dust from the fabric grinding process during recycling are also collected and turned into new fibres, that will then be turned to garments.

Fredrik: It's amazing, if we close that loop, that is the future of fashion, and then we can be very happy and proud of what we are wearing.

Right after my interview with Fredrik, I brought Berry to check H&M's Upcycling Workshop at Kidzania, one of four stations that make up the Greener World program, designed to teach kids  how to be good stewards of Mother Nature.

At H&M's Upcycling Workshop, kids will learn about H&M's garment collection program, and get to create a bracelet made from fabric scraps. They get to earn 10 Kidzos too by donating a shirt and completing their bracelet!

#hmclosetheloop at KidZania and the Greener World program runs until June 15, 2016.

H&M Holiday 2015

the H&M showroom gets cozy for the Holidays

Oh gosh, it's that time of year again. Who's ready for the holidays? I know I'm not!

Although admittedly, it's hard to get Scrooge-y when you're faced with warm Gingerbread Man cookies and a DIY ornament corner by Craft Manila.

Add to that, Holiday decorating suggestions from H&M.

Last year, I had a wishlist of items I wanted to get from the H&M Holiday Collection, and I was able to buy them all save for one. This year gets scarier because just look at how much more options there are now. You can actually go by theme: classic red, rustic silver or sophisticated gold.

Then again, the living room vignette at the H&M showroom managed to combine all three themes together into a look that's festive and yet clean.

So who says you can't mix and match, especially when you can afford to get them all because H&M Home is so affordable. Some of the items from the Home Holiday collection are out  now, but the rest should be trickling into H&M Home stores soon.

Don't forget to check out the Autumn/Winter 2015 Collection for kids and the A/W 2015 Studio Collection as well. They're perfect for Holiday dressing!

H&M Home is available at SM Makati and Robinsons Magnolia.

P.S. Watch out for H&M Cebu, opening very soon!

H&M Home in Robinsons Magnolia!

I am so excited about this, I am almost tempted not to share. Heehee.

But fine, in the hopes of gaining good karma, I might as well say it.

H&M is coming to Robinsons Magnolia! But here's the bigger deal. Are you ready for this?

They have H&M HOME!!!

O.M.G.

Back when we were living in the US, I actually had to ask my friend Sarj to get my H&M Home throws, place mats and table linen whenever she'd go home to Europe. It was almost like a precious commodity, even if H&M Home prices are so reasonable. No more waiting! Heehee.

The new store will open its doors on November 20, 2014 at 11am.

The 2-level, 3,000-square meter location will carry the brand’s full assortment for women, men, teenagers and children, as well as H&M Sport and H&M Mama. And just to stress, it will also be the first to offer H&M Home in the Philippines.

Finally, I can get my hands on their rustic table cloths.

I can finally do a chic holiday table setting, without spending a fortune! I can actually afford to do a red theme for Christmas...

As well as a gold theme for the New Year.

I've never tried buying their beddings, so I can't wait to see and feel the fabrics of their sheets and duvets.

The quality of their throw pillows are amazing! I remember Sarj got several for me, for just €5.99 a piece over 5 years ago, and they've lived as long as the Belgian linen ones I have from Restoration Hardware. Sulit na sulit.

I'm not sure I want to brave the crowds on opening day, but I have these pieces on my shopping list. Hopefully, H&M Robinsons Magnolia would still have some left for me!

For those shopping on opening day, you sort of get rewarded for lining up! Expect exclusive opening deals: umbrellas and magazines to the first 500 shoppers, tote bags and gift cards worth P200 to P2,000 each to the first 150 shoppers, and a gift card worth P5,000 await the first in line! Expect also some exciting Holiday deals up to 40% off on selected items.

Opening day store hours will be from 11am until midnight with regular store hours of 10am to 10pm resuming from November 21.

H&M VIP Night at SM Fashion Hall

SM Fashion Hall is my favorite mall of all!

All the brands I like have a store there, plus all the new restaurants there make dining out so much more interesting - Tim Ho Wan, Ippudo, Tuan Tuan, 8 Cuts Burgers, and so on. But wait, with Gino's Brick Oven Pizza now open in Podium, and Juju Eats opening across Wildflour, I feel a bit of my heart is torn. Teehee.

Ok, back to my story.

The day before H&M Manila opened, I happened to be in the mall because I had already started on my Christmas shopping list. With me popping in December, I needed a head start on getting gifts for all the kids on our list.

While on my way down to the lobby to meet our driver, my heart skipped a beat when I saw that the store was pretty much ready to open, with guys cleaning the store display windows.

The red carpet was laid out in front of the entrance, complete with velvet ropes and a step & repeat backdrop. Bongga!

On launch day itself, it looked like all of Manila was equally as excited about the opening, because people sure came in droves for VIP opening night. Many were dressed to the nines, in heels and full makeup.

I learned my lesson from attending H&M Singapore's VIP Opening Night, where I ended up hobbling in heels after hours of shopping and decided this time, I would dress to shop.

I went to to the launch wearing a comfy top from Elin, skinny jeans and flats, teehee.

Photo taken by Jackie Go

Honestly, I did not get to take too many photos because I was really there to shop and take advantage of the 20% discount on everything. Every time I ran into a friend, I would say, "No more chika, let's shop before the line to pay gets long!" Haha.

A quick photo before our H&M shopping marathon, c/o my friend Terry Dy

Yes, I wanted to make sure that we did our shopping fast, before the lines to the cash register got crazy long. No more fitting the clothes na din, because they have a 30 day return policy naman.

Lessons I learned, again from my H&M Singapore experience. Heehee.

But of course, here are the highlights from my H&M Manila shopping experience, which I think you should take note of.

1. The active wear section is all sorts of amazing.

If there's a section that you must constantly check out at H&M, it's the women's active wear section on the second floor.

The designs are fantastic, and the quality, for the price you pay, is not bad at all!

Then again, I am not a hardcore athlete so I may not be the best resource person for this haha. But for my pilates and yoga needs, this section floats my boat.

If you are not so much into active wear, then at least consider these active wear inspired sweat pants which I found close to the denim section. I convinced Jackie to get this pair because this is a closet must have.

You can dress it up with heels and a crisp tailored shirt, or dress it down with a tank and wedge sneakers or booties. Very Isabel Marant.

2. I just love the kids section.

While most of the guests were concentrating on the women's and men's sections, Jackie and I headed for the kids section on the top most floor. There were hardly any shoppers here, and we had the cuteness almost all to ourselves!

There were dresses, tops and sweet sweatshirts for baby girls...

Patchwork skinny jeans. They have skinny jeans for baby boys too, and I couldn't resist getting one for our baby boy coming soon!

I hoarded packs of underwear and organic cotton tank tops for my kids (Buy 2, get 1 Free - plus an additional 20% OFF!), cute accessories for Berry that she can wear for dress up play, and some bibs for our new baby boy. I was one happy mama because I scored on such great deals!

3. The best styles for women are at the ground floor.

Back at the women's section, I suggest you spend the most time combing the section on the ground floor. The more fashion forward pieces are here, as opposed to mostly basics at the second floor.

Jackie spotted this jumpsuit on the ground floor as well, yes, this exact same one worn by Liya Kebede for H&M's Fall 2014 lookbook, and a piece highlighted in Refinery29 because it supposedly resembles the uniform worn by Kurdish women fighters - which I think is just absurd.

Of course, Jackie and I bought this jumpsuit. At Php1190, less 20%, it would be crazy not to.

I almost caved in and bought these shorts. Almost.

Adorable in real life, and on Natasha Poly as well.

Maybe I'll come back for it. If H&M still has it in my size. I can just imagine that with the pandemonium on opening day itself, and excited shoppers coming to the store days after the opening, I may have to battle it out for these lace trimmed shorts.

Talk about military-inspired.
