Ten Things You Should Know About TICKLES

Back during my time, when you're a student with a limited budget, Tickles was the place to go to for retail therapy. It was not uncommon for my friends and I to head out to Tickles to pick up a stuffed flower (it's a flower made out of stuffed toy material heehee), stationery, or whatever fun, unnecessary tchotchke they had in store.

So when Tickles finally opened their 80 sqm circus-themed flagship store in Megamall this month, it wasn't a suprise at all that my mom friends all suddenly had Tickles on their Instagram feed. It was the original wasteland of our youth. In case you don't know what I'm talking about, which I doubt, here are ten fun facts about one of my favorite stores in the 90s.

1. Tickles brings out the feel good vibes.

“It seems that a lot of people are rooting for Tickles, because it’s a homegrown brand that carries a lot of fond memories,” says Carlo Tanseco, Creative Director of Tickles.

True enough, the site of a boarded up store in Megamall with the Tickles logo on it was enough to send me spiralling back to memory lane, back when I was in high school and my friends and I would visit the store in Greenhills and come out with stuff we don't really need but had to have because they were so cute!

2. It's steeped in history and the founder's love for retail.

For my millennial readers who are not familiar with Tickles, you're gonna love the heritage and history behind it.

Tickles was established in 1979 by Yoya Tanseco, Carlo’s mom, who is still its chairman, chief visionary and master shopper. A creative soul, intrepid businesswoman, and social butterfly rolled into one, Yoya dove into several successful business ventures before finding her true niche in retail.

“From dressmaking and designing wedding gowns, to catering and making cakes for children’s parties, name it, I’ve done it! I’m the type who can’t sit still,” recounts Yoya. “But ever since childhood, I’ve always loved retail. When we would make bahay-bahayan, I would be the treasurer and the purchaser. Mahilig ako sa kaha and purchasing.“

And so together with her sister and a good friend, Yoya she set up the very first Tickles in Shoppesville, Greenhills, stocking it with all sorts of cute gift items and adorable finds from travels to New York and Japan. “That was the time Hello Kitty was popular, and all the ballpens were so cute. In school, yan ang weakness ko—notebooks, ballpens… And so I enjoyed shopping for Tickles so much kasi ‘cutie-cutie.’” Everything she picked out would fly off the shelves, and she realized she was able to turn her love for shopping and travel into something that brought happiness to others.

Soon, the store was no longer just a hobby, and when her sister and friend migrated abroad, she ran the store on her own. Later on, she enlisted the help of her children (and eventually, Chun-chi Soler, Chief Operating Officer) to help with the store’s expansion.

3. It's a bounce back from the ashes (or in this case, basics) sort of story.

Branching out from the original shop in Greenhills, Tickles set up stores in Shangri-La Plaza, Robinsons Manila, Glorietta, and Alabang Town Center in the 1990s. However, with a struggling economy and the kids busy with other ventures, the stores dwindled to one branch in Glorietta. Even the goods on display were a sign of the times: “Everything was just very basic and functional,” shares Carlo. “But we didn’t want my mom’s dream to die; the brand was still strong, and so with Chun-chi’s help, we focused on reviving the store.”

Fast-forward to today: Tickles is back and bigger than ever, now with 11 stores across the metro.

4. It's worth checking out their sister stores: a'postrophe and ROY & BIV.

Tickles has also spun off into two other concept stores: a’postrophe, featuring more “grown-up” fashion and lifestyle items, and the bright and cheery ROY & BIV, where quirky gift items are categorized into the colors of the rainbow. Tickles, a’postrophe, and ROY & BIV also all carry the sub-brand Elemenopy (“Made from 100% genuine letter,” Chun-chi quips), which creates a distinct line of monogram- and letter-inspired merchandise for each of the brands.

5. It continues to be the go-to place for fun, gifts and novelties

From your go-to gift shop for special occasions, Tickles has evolved into a novelty shop for all seasons—and generations. “The line is more curated, and yet now appeals to different markets,” says Carlo.

6. Most of their products are original designs.

In their effort to offer unique items you can’t find anywhere else, the Tickles team now designs their own products, and also collaborates with other brands. Which shouldn't come as a surprise because I remember my former officemate Sabs Cacho once told me that Carlo has an impressive background in industrial design.

“Now, most of the items in the store are proprietary, which means we make it ourselves. Some of the items are still sourced, or made exclusively for us by international suppliers, but our focus is to design our own items. Our goal is to be 100% Tickles-branded,” Carlo reveals. “We also try to find the best sources to make our items affordable,” adds Chun-chi.

7. They will keep evolving, and moving on to next big hit.

In a market where nothing stays original for long, the team’s challenge is to come up with items that will tickle the fancy of their customers before anyone else. “We always think, what can we offer that is unique, that is not out there yet?” shares Carlo. “It’s inevitable that people will copy our items; it happens. But my perspective is to keep moving forward, design more, be ahead of the trend.”

8. Expect something fresh and new each visit.

New items are introduced every week, so there’s always something fresh to discover at the store. At the heart of everything they source or create for Tickles is the mission to bring “Happiness All Year Round.”

9. Tickles knows what we want.

From all-time favorite cute Japanese pens and notebooks with humorous sayings, to this season’s bestselling eye masks and food-inspired plushies, the Tickles team lead by Yoya Tanseco seems to know exactly the “kiliti” of Pinoys—perhaps the secret to why they’ve outlasted local and foreign competitors alike.

10. Heritage, forward thinking and a desire to keep it's customers happy is the key.

“I’d like to think that it’s the memory attached to the brand, and the feel-good items in the store, that have made us last all these years,” shares Carlo. “We’re just here to put smiles on their faces.”

Tickles is located at Glorietta 4, Greenbelt 1, Power Plant Mall, SM Megamall A, TriNoma, UP Town Center, Alabang Town Center, Market! Market!, Marquee Mall, Fairview Terraces, and Ayala Center Cebu. Follow @tickles_PH on Twitter and Instagram, or visit Tickles_ph on Facebook.

The Florence Fling

How can I not love a store which validates how I look in their dresses? Heeheehee.

My friend Jenny Infante-Reyes invited me and some of our mommy friends to her cousin Tessa Nieto-Villalon's clothing store, The Florence Fling, in Megamall and it was just the most fun place in that side of Megamall Bldg. A!

Tessa was there to help me and Jackie pick out dresses, and she was wearing something of her own design from one of her earlier collections: a printed dress in red, orange and white, which had a yellow satin belt around the waist. So colorful and eye-catching. Reminds me of classic shift dresses of the 60s, the kind Audrey Hepburn would wear, but made more modern because of the print.

Tessa, who made her name as a model during her teen years, also has a strong background in fashion, working in fashion retail for the past couple of years. She eventually decided to branch out on her own and started Florence Fling, designing dresses that she herself would personally wear.

I gravitated towards her matching separates, like this blue number that you can wear together as a set, or separately, if you just play around with the tops and bottoms. Really versatile.

Because I have a penchant for stripes, I immediately went for this two piece striped set, although I also like the sleeveless top and skirt that Jackie tried on.

Made from jersey, the top and skirt fit and fall well. I lavetttt. I actually ended up getting the black version of that white top, and the exact same skirt like Jackie's too. Heehee.

I also love that the fitting rooms are so fun! I can spend hours just trying on clothes here. Lots of mirrors...

Bright tropical themed wall art, and the rooms are big enough to fit a stroller! I can wheel my Mamas & Papas Armadillo stroller in, so that I don't have to worry about my child sleeping in it outside.

The "rah rah, you look great!" quotes all over the store are adorably cheeky.

And this one by the cash register can dispel any guilt. Wink. Wink.

The Florence Fling has pieces perfect for weekends, for work, and cocktails. They're quite versatile too in that you can pair a top of a set with your favorite shorts for the weekend, and wear the skirt to a dressier occasion, and you'd look smashing either way.

Visit The Florence Fling at the 2nd level of Megamall Building A. It's close to Clinica Manila.

Uno de 50 Autumn/Winter 2015 Collection

If you're looking for statement accessories, look no further than Spanish jewelry label, Uno de 50.

From chunky silver charmers, to this big-ass pearl ring (which I happily brought home with me)...

To Swarovski crystal-ized...

To in-your-face Swarovski-d out bling rings...

Uno de 50 has that, and more.

Their Autumn/Winter 2015 Connection collection in particular, made up of 4 varied but equally inspired lines tell a compelling story.

Designs from the Magic line reflect the light, colour and shimmer of the Northern Lights through blue, green, grey and pink Swarovski Elements crystals.

The Intimacy line are made up of pieces shaped as keys and hearts of different sizes, rendered in leather and silver-coated metal.

Necklaces from the Vastness line, made entirely of silver-coated metal, have organic shapes that are reminiscent of vegetation capped with snow and ice.

The Forest line consists of nature-inspired elements - "drops of frozen dew, stalactites or pebble stones, as well as other natural elements such as insects or berries and the seeds that precede the arrival of the first snowfalls."

There's a rough-hewn yet gentle quality to Uno de 50 pieces, a free-spirited bohemian vibe that is distinctive and artsy. I can totally see artists, ad agency creatives, and just about anybody who appreciates unique but everyday appropriate pieces to rock these.

Uno de 50 was founded in the late 1990's by a group of designers who decided to establish a brand of fashion jewelry and accessories that would break all existing molds. The brand was called Uno de 50 because they started out with the original philosophy of creating exclusively 50 units of each design, which proved to be an unqualified success. To date, Uno de 50 is in 15 countries, from Spain to Belgium, to Mexico, United States, and now the Philippines (Uno de 50 boutiques are at SM Aura and SM Megamall). H&M VIP Night at SM Fashion Hall

SM Fashion Hall is my favorite mall of all!

All the brands I like have a store there, plus all the new restaurants there make dining out so much more interesting - Tim Ho Wan, Ippudo, Tuan Tuan, 8 Cuts Burgers, and so on. But wait, with Gino's Brick Oven Pizza now open in Podium, and Juju Eats opening across Wildflour, I feel a bit of my heart is torn. Teehee.

Ok, back to my story.

The day before H&M Manila opened, I happened to be in the mall because I had already started on my Christmas shopping list. With me popping in December, I needed a head start on getting gifts for all the kids on our list.

While on my way down to the lobby to meet our driver, my heart skipped a beat when I saw that the store was pretty much ready to open, with guys cleaning the store display windows.

The red carpet was laid out in front of the entrance, complete with velvet ropes and a step & repeat backdrop. Bongga!

On launch day itself, it looked like all of Manila was equally as excited about the opening, because people sure came in droves for VIP opening night. Many were dressed to the nines, in heels and full makeup.

I learned my lesson from attending H&M Singapore's VIP Opening Night, where I ended up hobbling in heels after hours of shopping and decided this time, I would dress to shop.

I went to to the launch wearing a comfy top from Elin, skinny jeans and flats, teehee.

Photo taken by Jackie Go

Honestly, I did not get to take too many photos because I was really there to shop and take advantage of the 20% discount on everything. Every time I ran into a friend, I would say, "No more chika, let's shop before the line to pay gets long!" Haha.

A quick photo before our H&M shopping marathon, c/o my friend Terry Dy

Yes, I wanted to make sure that we did our shopping fast, before the lines to the cash register got crazy long. No more fitting the clothes na din, because they have a 30 day return policy naman.

Lessons I learned, again from my H&M Singapore experience. Heehee.

But of course, here are the highlights from my H&M Manila shopping experience, which I think you should take note of.

1. The active wear section is all sorts of amazing.

If there's a section that you must constantly check out at H&M, it's the women's active wear section on the second floor.

The designs are fantastic, and the quality, for the price you pay, is not bad at all!

Then again, I am not a hardcore athlete so I may not be the best resource person for this haha. But for my pilates and yoga needs, this section floats my boat.

If you are not so much into active wear, then at least consider these active wear inspired sweat pants which I found close to the denim section. I convinced Jackie to get this pair because this is a closet must have.

You can dress it up with heels and a crisp tailored shirt, or dress it down with a tank and wedge sneakers or booties. Very Isabel Marant.

2. I just love the kids section.

While most of the guests were concentrating on the women's and men's sections, Jackie and I headed for the kids section on the top most floor. There were hardly any shoppers here, and we had the cuteness almost all to ourselves!

There were dresses, tops and sweet sweatshirts for baby girls...

Patchwork skinny jeans. They have skinny jeans for baby boys too, and I couldn't resist getting one for our baby boy coming soon!

I hoarded packs of underwear and organic cotton tank tops for my kids (Buy 2, get 1 Free - plus an additional 20% OFF!), cute accessories for Berry that she can wear for dress up play, and some bibs for our new baby boy. I was one happy mama because I scored on such great deals!

3. The best styles for women are at the ground floor.

Back at the women's section, I suggest you spend the most time combing the section on the ground floor. The more fashion forward pieces are here, as opposed to mostly basics at the second floor.

Jackie spotted this jumpsuit on the ground floor as well, yes, this exact same one worn by Liya Kebede for H&M's Fall 2014 lookbook, and a piece highlighted in Refinery29 because it supposedly resembles the uniform worn by Kurdish women fighters - which I think is just absurd.

Of course, Jackie and I bought this jumpsuit. At Php1190, less 20%, it would be crazy not to.

I almost caved in and bought these shorts. Almost.

Adorable in real life, and on Natasha Poly as well.

Maybe I'll come back for it. If H&M still has it in my size. I can just imagine that with the pandemonium on opening day itself, and excited shoppers coming to the store days after the opening, I may have to battle it out for these lace trimmed shorts.

Talk about military-inspired.

United Colors of Benetton Spring 2014 Trunk Show

When I think of Spring, I think bright, happy colors.

That's pretty much what comes to mind too, when somebody mentions United Colors of Benetton.

Tessa Prieto-Valdez hosted UCB's Spring 2014 trunk show in  showstopping colors, wearing a Benetton dress underneath a geometric print skirt

United Colors of Benetton recently celebrated the launch of their Spring 2014 Collection via a trunk show at their High Street store.

Four fun and colorful looks were put together by celebrity stylist Alyanna Martinez, and I loved how she playfully put together the super versatile pieces from the collection to come up with practical outfits to wear during casual days.

Loved the reasonably priced pique polo shirts for guys, and the neon dresses for girls! I ended up bringing home a piece from the collection, thanks to Johanna and Rina of Benetton - a pair of super comfy and stretchy fuchsia UCB jeans that hugs at the right places but doesn't make me sweat in this heat!

An Afternoon with Karen at KARIMADON

While my friend Karen Wu was in town, she invited me and the SoMoms to her mom's store KARIMADON

When I told my mommy friends about it, they all started reminiscing about their high school years, when they shopped at Karimadon for party dresses.

Michelle aka My Mom Friday remembers buying her party clothes at their store in Virra Mall, when Karimadon had square pants and cropped tops that were so right on trend (actually, cropped tops are back!), and Carmina Villaroel was the It Girl at the time, when the term "It Girl" was still unheard of, heehee!

Carmina with Ruffa & Aiko, via FashionPulis.com

Karen's parents started Karimadon in 1980, which is actually an acronym of their children's first names. So yes, Karen is the Kar in Karimadon!

Today it has grown into 16 boutiques in malls, with 4 department store locations. Admittedly, most of us moms haven't been inside Karimadon in years, associating it with special occasion clothes for younger girls with great figures, but we were in for a pleasant surprise.

I spotted chic cocktail dresses at unbelievably affordable price points. Nothing above Php3,000. Most of their cocktail dresses are in the Php1,500 to Php2,000 range.

This particular one had pretty crystal embellishments.

I especially loved this structured dress. Very Roland Mouret/Victoria Beckham. If I only knew that they would take photos of me in this dress, I would have put on makeup haha! Thanks for lending your YSL wooden heel pumps for dress-up, Karen!

There's a red version too, and it's unbelievable how this dress retails for Php2,500. I'll wear it with really great accessories, get my hair and makeup done, and it can easily look like a million bucks. Or Php20,000 heehee.

They also had jersey jumpsuits that are very Studio54, just like what Kris aka OC Mom in Manila is wearing (it's very party in the back aka backless!), and Grecian style gowns that are flattering for all body types. Apart from special occasion clothing, they have sheath dresses for work, tops & bottoms for everyday wear, and accessories.

Karen shares that 34 years later, her mom continues to work with the in-house design team and is very much involved in design up to now.  It was also great to know that apart from being locally designed, Karimadon clothes are made right here in the Philippines, which allows them to also take care of alterations, so customers are ensured of a great fit!

Thanks so much for having us over, Karen! We had such a great time re-discovering Karimadon!

For more on Karimadon check out www.karimadonfashion.com, Like them on Facebook, and follow @KarimadonPH on Twitter & Instagram.
