MFO Shoe Series: Vanessa Mayuga-Santos, Manila

My friend Vanessa Santos, aka #thevainmama, is The Model Mama.

And not just because she's gorgeous and statuesque. She makes motherhood look so stylish, easy and fun! Not only that, she still manages to squeeze in time to be productive for herself, for her own enjoyment.

Van is the Beauty Seeker for cult online store Seek the Uniq and her cousin Mavis Manotoc-Fuentebella's partner at Stella by TALA. She also contributes to Glam-o-mamas and Glamourbox, in between shuttling the kids to and from their daily activities.

We always look forward to play dates at their home, where she thoughtfully whips up virgin sangrias for us mommas, to go with the sumptuous snacks she puts together in her kitchen. I remember stuffing myself one time with warm bread slathered in butter swirled with strawberry jam while the kids played princess dress up. I couldn't stop eating it. Van told me to just whisk softened butter with strawberry jam in a food processor, et voila - strawberry flavored butter. It's brillz. She's brillz.

When it comes to style, expect nothing less from Van of course. Her marketing and PR stints at Luxasia and Louis Vuitton Philippines have honed and trained her eye to appreciate quality and luxury in a quiet, informed and discerning level. Her selection of shoes reflect just that.

How many pairs of shoes do you own?

Am basing this on my closet shelves - about 50 pairs.

What's your shoe size?

39 to 40

Which pairs are your favorites?

Lanvin Ballet Flats for traveling. I normally use this on the plane. The are easy to slip on and off and can be dressed up or down.

Cesare Paciotti boots. I scored these at a secret sample sale in Korea. Luckily most of the shoes were in my size! The boots are gorgeous and so comfortable.

The Cesare Paciotti embellished pumps are a statement piece that I'm saving for a special occasion.

YSL Black Tribute Pumps. I call these my "power shoes". They are classic black pumps that always make me feel a little more confident (probably because of the 4 inch heels). I love how the secret platform makes these shoes super comfy and I can wear them the entire day without any problems.

Maison Martin Margiela sneakers. I am not the sporty type but I have accepted that sneakers are the way to go for traveling. In my 30's and with two kids in tow, comfort that is stylish is always a winner.

Etro sandals, my most recent purchase. I lean towards simple, clean pieces when it comes to my clothes. Even in terms of colors, I generally stick to plains and neutrals. This fun pair of sandals should add a punch to most of my favorite shift dresses.

If you could only wear one pair of shoes, which one would it be?

Sandals...

...or flats.

What are your favorite shoe brands?

Lanvin, YSL, Louis Vuitton, Cesaro Paciotti, Mystique, and Renegade Folk here in Manila.

Van's collection of Louis Vuitton footwear, because an LV girl has to walk the talk

Gypset glam sandals by Mystique

Van's growing collection of Renegade Folk sandals

What's in your shoe lust list?

I need new flipflops for swimming. I’m so tempted to get the Valentino camo x Havaianas. Its your fault Tin! Haha

Where do you buy shoes?

Mostly abroad.

What's that one shoe you can't bear to give away or throw out?

My patent navy Lanvin Ballet flats from 2008. They were my first pair and I bring them to almost every trip I go to.

MFO Shoe Series: Kat Garcia, Manila

Kat Garcia is my momma fitspiration. Just take a hard look at those seriously hard abs.

I often ask this mom of two for fitness tips and I love how she encourages but never pushes me to workout. What she told me to focus on, was to be conscious of what I eat. Like she always says, "Abs are made in the kitchen! Torn in the gym! 80% nutrition, 20% sweat!"

A self-confessed workout junkie and healthy eating advocate (sugar and salt are the enemy!), she calls herself a "crazy purse collector who loves bikes, cars, pistols, basketball and is a hardcore UFC fan." And I love how her shoe collection is a true reflection of her personal style!

Btw, for this year's series of shoe girls, I enlisted the help of my friend, photographer Camille King, to join me as we take the Shoe Series a notch up with professional photos (when all of our schedules permit of course, heehee). Hope you will love this new look for the series as much as I do. Super thanks Camille for becoming my partner in the MFO Shoe Series now!

Since Kat is a purse collector first & foremost, Camille & I just had to get photos of a few of the highlights of Kat's purse collection.

And now, on to her shoes!

How many pairs of shoes do you own?

I used to own over a 100 pairs but I had to downsize...since I can only bring what I need in our condo.

Girly pairs that she hardly wears, but can't let go of, as these were gifts from her Mom

Boots for traveling to cooler climes

More girly shoes from her mom

What's your shoe size?

Omg... for real? Im a 9.5-10.... hey wait almost 5'8 naman ako! But yes...all my trainers are Men's shoes!

Which pairs are your favorites?

My Nike 2014 Fly Knit Airmax and Asics Gel Blurr33 - great for all around training.

If you could only wear one pair of shoes, which one would it be?

Hahaha!!! I can wear Nike or Asics all day!

What are your favorite shoe brands?

Nike, Asics and New Balance

What's in your shoe lust list?

Ooooooooh.... tough one but I hope batman (my dad) sees this. Also madame (mom). ALL nike 2014 fly knit mens shoes haha!!! I said ALL! and Asics Kill Bill.

Asics Kill Bill via highsnobiety.com

Where do you buy shoes?

Nike Shang. Nike at Shang has a good selection as always. Well, I'm obviously a suki since I bully the kuyas there to give me the first dibs on new arrivals! Plus my kids tambay there and the ates and kuyas are okay w/ them haha!

Planet Sports and Net-a-Porter...oh and GigaSports Hong Kong.

Isabel Marant Bayley Star and Bekett wedge sneakers from Net-a-Porter

What's that one shoe you can't bear to give away or throw out?

My Lebron basketball shoes.

Of course, I could never let Kat go with just sharing her shoe collection. I had to ask her about her workout routine, what she eats, and because she has amazingly poreless skin, her skincare routine.

How do you get those abs? I mean seriously!

For my workout routine...I have been going hard these days because of endurance and strength training. I want to be macho so I can maneuver my dream Ducati monster bike. Also I want to join the basketball team here sa Rockwell Gym, I'm not kidding.

I am doing krav maga soon and going back hardcore on kettle bell training. I do cardio via summit trainer and run 4km w/ abs on fire MWF, then tues/thurs/ sat I go heavy on strength training. (Didn't Kat say abs is 80% nutrition? Buti na lang!)

Uhm ok, change topic, hahaha. Let's just talk about what you eat? 80% nutrition, majority wins.

Oh for the food, well I design our own shakes and meals that goes well w/ our training. My husband is on a fat cry/lean up program I designed, while I'm on a high energy/ high protein lean up program. I have perfected one shake I use for pre, during and post workouts. I call it the fat cry/lean up energy shake.

Fat cry/lean up energy shake
1tbsp ground flax seed
1/2 banana
1tbsp whey protein powder ( I use show me the whey from healthy options) but peanut butter will do for the kuripot ones hehe
1/2 yakult or 1/2 nestle strawberry yogurt
1/2 cup almond or skim milk
1/2 cup water

NOTE: WE DON'T COUNT CALORIES, WE FOCUS ON WELL BALANCED NUTRITIOUS SHAKES/MEALS.

Now, tell me about your poreless skin. It looks airbrushed you know.

I use to be a solid La Mer junkie but I had to stop for a while because I want more Airmax and I'm saving up for a 9mm pistol and my dream Ducati monster bike haha!!!

I use pure argan oil all over. I have a bad case of psoriasis and my kids have skin asthma. It was the only product that made us say BYE to the lotion we hoard at S&R hehe!

It was a gift to me last Christmas, it was a lot so I gave them away as well. I really don't plan to sell them...and go all out in the market, but what I use is 100% pure argan oil from Spain and has certification. I supply friends and family and some derma clinics at the Medical City.

PS - Of course, Camille & I ended up buying a bottle of this wonder Argan Oil from Spain and convinced Kat to sell to MFO readers as well! It's unscented and is so non-greasy, I use it on my face each morning as a base for my CC Cream. Email garciakat26@yahoo.com if you'd like to buy too!

The Perfect Peter Pan Collar

My friend Naomi has been looking for a top with a Peter Pan collar for the longest time. She has been scouring the shops but still has turned up with nada. I want one too, but I haven't searched the way Naomi has, with.a.passion.

I used to have a cute one, when I was in my 20s. It was a cream polka dot top with delicate puff sleeves and a black Peter Pan collar that I would wear with a pleated black skirt that I bought at a uniform store in MBK in Bangkok for the equivalent of Php300. I wore it with Yulo Manila round toe pumps, which I bought from my grad school roommate Jaraiza. Her sister, the designer Kristel Yulo, used to make shoes then. That outfit was one of my favorite "office casual" looks at the time. But oh yes, that top, Peter Pan collar and polka dots, so right on trend for now!

But no use looking for that, it would just look to young and I would feel a bit silly wearing the same outfit now.

A few days ago, over hot chocolate and macarons at Antoinette in Mandarin Gallery with my SIL Leslie and I, Naomi spotted a group of middle-aged ladies beside our table. Of the five, two were wearing similar short sleeved knit tops, one in black, the other in red, both with crisp white Peter Pan collars.

"Tin, that's the perfect Peter Pan collar!" Naomi said. And she couldn't resist pointing the ladies out to me. As they all stood up to leave, I didn't see any collars, only a parade of crocodile Birkins that grazed our gaze. "Tin, look!" Naomi said again.

And then, I saw. There they were, perfectly rounded, just the right size and width, and it came across as totally classic. Totally age appropriate. The knit top was the perfect backdrop for it.

We wondered where they bought those, and made a mental note, filing each detail in memory - sleeve length, length of top, colors, that perfect Peter Pan collar.

A few days later, I serendipitously found them. A black knit top with the perfect Peter Pan collar hanging in front of me, in all its glory. It almost felt like there was a spotlight shining on it, saying, "Here I am! Buy me!"

Too bad it was inside Louis Vuitton Island Maison in Marina Bay Sands. The crocodile Birkins should have been a clue aka "You won't find that in Topshop".

I called Naomi, to share the news. Good news = "I found it!". Bad news = "It's not within our budget capabilities!" I felt her excitement rise up and then crash.

The search is still on.

Q&A Time! Breaking Into Fashion + What Bag to Buy?

Hi Tin! I've been reading your blog since 2007. Your posts have inspired me to no end. What action plans would you recommend to people like me wanting to penetrate the fashion industry (aside fr the obvious-i.e. taking fashion classes, internships)? I've heard not-so-nice things about the fashion industry. I'm actually scared to make a move. Fashion schools here in PI cost a lot! Thanks!

Hi! Thanks for your question! You're on the right track by asking. It's a baby step, but the fact that you are considering this career move is worth something. You know what, I can totally get where you are coming from. I've taken the circuitous route to get to where I am (fashion blogger/writer and I can't say I am totally immersed in the industry as of yet) and what I can tell you is, once you get straight with yourself by affirming that this is where you want to be, and start making an effort to really see what is out there for you, you'll find that things just fall into place.

Ok, that was a little vague. Let's put it this way, the first step is always the hardest. You don't want to invest time and money doing something that might not be what you want in the end. But the thing I learned is, you'll never know until you try. And the fashion industry is such a huge industry that being in it per se is not the end all and be all. You still have to find your niche.

There are actually dozens of careers in fashion - there's planning and merchandising, retailing, online retailing, warehouse logistics, fashion design, technical design, accessories design, pattern making, cutting, sewing, showroom sales, events, PR, publishing, journalism, styling, photography, model management, trend spotting, forecasting, and so on. You can work for a designer, a retailer, a luxury house, a fashion forecasting/consulting firm, a PR firm, a modeling agency, a photography studio, a publishing firm, a manufacturing company, a showroom, a warehouse etc and you would still be technically working in fashion. So you have to find out where you want to be in exactly. Do you want to be on the creative side? The technical/production side? The business/management side? The marketing and publicity side? And you will never know until you dip your toes into the fashion pond.

The easiest and most cost-effective way to get into fashion is to just be curious and ask people in the industry what they are doing, what it's like, and from there, figure out if this is really where you want to be in. Start by asking friends, relatives, friends of friends/relatives in the industry (Manila is a small place, you are bound to know someone who is in the industry) and just keep on being inquisitive. Hearing their accounts first hand will dispel or corroborate the myth that fashion is a cut throat industry. But to be honest, while there are horror stories, I've met so many people in the industry, both back in Manila and here in New York who are nothing but the sweetest, most approachable, amazing, creative and fun people that I have ever met! Some have become very good friends in fact! So don't be too scared. I think if people see that you are sincere and you have a good heart, and that you just really have that passion for fashion, they will be more than happy to help you out and watch out for you. But yeah, you can't all be sugar and spice in this industry too. You also have to have tough skin and be prepared to bitch it out when it's time to draw the talons out. Because the industry attracts a lot of flakes, posers and dodos too, heehee! But generally, the decent, self-assured ones treat you the way you want to be treated and at the same time, if you are nice and sincere, then people are nice and sincere back, it's that simple.

Now once you've decided that you are made to be in the industry, then start taking classes, even just short courses that will pique your interest. From there, you can take further classes to dig deeper into the subject, or move on to another short course to help you figure out exactly where you want to focus in. Consider it this way too, when you sign up for a class, you are also signing up to a valuable network of people, whether they be classmates, teachers or alumni who can help you break into the industry eventually. I have been taking classes at FIT, and I find that my teachers here are more than happy to answer questions and emails from students and will give you the exposure and opportunity to get your hands "dirty". If not for my teacher at FIT who handles/organizes volunteers for Fashion Week, I would not have had the chance to help out backstage and be part of the runway shows, albeit from the sidelines, haha. Volunteers of course don't get paid, but that was quite an experience that was worth giving up one day to wake up early in the morning and run all over the city for.

While obvious, internships are really a great way to break into the industry. It's practically a rite of passage, a valuable one, especially since you get to see how things are from the bottom (which is important once you start working your way up). Internships are generally unpaid, but the opportunity to see how things are done is what you should be aiming for at this point. It's a sacrifice in a way, but think of it this way, if you are enjoying what you are doing, money hardly matters. And from what I've seen, when people enjoy and love what they do, the money eventually follows!

So don't hesitate! If you want to be in fashion, take that first step now, no matter how difficult and daunting it seems to be! Once you start taking that step, you'll see that the next steps become easier and opportunities just open up for you one after the other. Next thing you know, you are in the industry and you are loving every minute of it!

Good luck and keep me posted on how your fashion adventure goes! ;)

I need help! I'm contemplating which bag to buy...a damier speedy or a goyard st. louis. need your advice!

thanks :)

Hi there dear reader! I see you are a in a bit of a dilemma! Should you get this?

Or this?

Hmmmm, I actually don't know how to answer this. Because it really depends on your lifestyle. Instead, I will just list out my top of mind pros and cons for each bag, and give you a couple of follow-up questions to help you come up with a decision!

Damier Speedy PROS
- Classic
- Cheaper than a St. Louis PM (Damier Speedy 30 is $700 vs. a St. Louis PM that retails at $940)
- You can use this for work and on weekends
- Secure and zippered so no worries about your stuff spilling out
- You can even lock it for extra protection (although it would be such a hassle to really lock-up your bag, the lock and keys are really just an homage/throwback to the origins of LV bags as traveling bags)
- Still looks great after many years

St. Louis PROS
- Classic
- Lightweight
- Great for traveling
- Can be worn over the shoulder or carried on the crook of your arm
- Spacious
- Comes in a variety of colors
- May be personalized with stripes, initials, etc.
- Has a detachable pouch

Damier Speedy CONS
- Has to be hand held or carried on the crook of your arm
- LV is quite an ubiquitous label
- the bag itself is not made of leather but of coated canvas

St. Louis CONS
- Too casual for work (if you work in a corporate setting)
- Although you can bring it to work, it functions more as a tote/secondary bag to carry extra stuff
- More expensive than a Damier Speedy
- It's a very "open" bag, no means to zip it up or tie it at the sides to keep your stuff protected
- the bag itself is not made of leather but of coated hemp canvas
- Tends to look "battered" when overused (although this can also be quite charming)

Now remember, these are just the pros and cons off the top of my head. There could be more I haven't really thought of. But as a rule, whenever I am contemplating on a purchase of a high ticket item, these are the things I ask myself...

1. Is it within my budget?
2. Will I be able to pass this on to my kid, sister, niece, etc. / Is this sturdy? A classic?
3. Do I own something similar to this item? If No, then proceed. If yes, then I might not need it.
4. Will it go with most of my stuff?
5. How often will I use it? If I can use it as often as I can, then it's worth it (Cost Per Wear). If I can only use it occasionally, then
I'd rather go for something more practical and "value for money".
6. Will this item fit into my lifestyle? (ie, I carry a lot of stuff with me all the time, so I'll need a tote vs. I can live with just my wallet, keys and make-up kit in my bag, so I'll get the Speedy)
7. Do I want this because it's trendy/everyone has it? (Don't get it, save your money for something that calls out your name!) or do I want it because I appreciate the craftsmanship/quality of the item? (I will love this for life!)
8. Has this item been on my mind for days/weeks/months? If you've forgotten about it, you most likely can live without it.

If this still doesn't help, let me put it this way. Either way, you won't go wrong! These are both great picks and I don't think you'll experience buyer's remorse with whatever you end up with! ;)
