Cafe Shibuya at UP Town Center

Our friends Jon & Cathy, Berry's Ninong & Ninang, and their in-laws opened Cafe Shibuya in UP Town Center back in October, and we've been meaning to go ever since, except that something always turns up and our plans to go to Quezon City always gets foiled.

So by the time we finally made it there, I had already heard so much about Cafe Shibuya, I knew we were definitely in for a treat!

Cafe Shibuya is named after their Shibuya Toast, which is a Japanese version of a French toast. Decadent and indulgent when eaten with ice cream & fruits on top, slathered with Nutella or drizzled with honey, Cafe Shibuya's bread alone is so soft, and tasty, it can stand by itself. It's that good.

I told Jon they should start selling their bread, I would happily eat it for breakfast everyday.

It is not surprising that most people I know who have been there think of it as a dessert place, especially since their "There's always room for dessert" wall is the most photographed corner in almost all the blogs and Instagram photos I have seen.

More so because people often stop by after lunch or dinner, for their best seller, the Ghirardelli Triple Dark Chocolate Frappe.

Yes, they have the license from Ghirardelli to use and prepare their hot chocolate and coffee drinks the Ghirardelli way.

But more than just sweet drinks and desserts, Dada & I loved their savory dishes as well. You really do have to try their Savory Toasts, as the chalk board suggests.

This, we loved. The fried poached egg with smoked salmon. O.M.G. This is what brunch is all about.

Berry had the Spaghetti al Tonno - tuna, capers and olives in a tomato basil sauce. Healthy and delicious.

But I really have to direct you back to their fried poached egg on Shibuya Toast. That, with a Cafe Shibuya Latte, are what Saturday brunches are made of.

Singapore Eats: PS. Cafe at Dempsey Hill

Don't let this rusty signage fool you. There is nothing old, corroded or creaky about P.S. Cafe. If anything, this cafe is charming, cozy, casual and has basically become our go to place for brunch on a lazy weekend.

Whenever we are here, I always tell myself I am up for a new dish, but after repeated scans through the menu, I always end up copying Dada's order - our old faithful, THE PS. Brunch Burger ($29). It's huge, so juicy, and always hits the spot! I will have to say, this is the best burger in Singapore I have tried, hands down. The bacon & crispy onions contribute to alternating pops of flavor that add dimension to the perfectly grilled patty. I don't usually eat eggs, but propped on top of the bun, nestling the protein, it's a welcome treat!

Homemade grilled wagyu & US chuck patty topped with camembert cheese, wilted spinach, crispy bacon, tomato, crispy onions, herby mayo & fried egg on a sesame bun with PS. Fries & aoili

Meanwhile, the PS. Fish & Chips ($28) is Berry's favorite. It's crunchy, tasty, fun and easy to eat! The perfect kiddie meal since it's not messy and the vegetable sticks add nutrition & color to the dish.

When my mom came to visit, we took her to brunch here of course. She got overwhelmed by the serving sizes passing by our table, so she ordered the Cheese & Caramelized Onion Quiche ($22). It's a light dish, portioned perfectly, so you won't over eat. The greens & fruit balance off the eggs & cheese so I'd say it's nothing to be guilty about.

I always say I would make room for dessert, and start off with great expectations, after seeing the dessert menu, but we often end up so full from our meal that we'd often pass.

Except for that one time that we had brunch with Sara, Bob & Peyton and we all dug into this delightful chocolate & marshmallow dessert, served with a side of vanilla ice cream that is just so "close your eyes & savor the goodness" kind of good! Some days, I catch myself dreaming of eating this. All by myself. No sharing. Ha!

Hmmm, maybe tomorrow is the day!

Singapore Eats: Spruce

Like Jones the Grocer, I first heard of Spruce from Naomi. She told me that it was so near our place, and was a great place for brunch. So when I set a date with our friend Sunny, who had also just moved to Singapore from New York, and Oliver of AVA.ph, who was here for a quick visit, I thought we might as well try Spruce!

Spruce is located inside Phoenix Park on Tanglin Road. It's fairly easy to get here, as you can take a bus plying the Tanglin Road route, or just get here by car or cab. It's right by the entrance of Phoenix Park so no worries about walking too far from the road.

Here's what we ordered:

Berry and I shared this Momotaro Tomato Soup (S$14), rich, thick and creamy, with just the right tangy-ness too it

Oliver had the Spinach and Bacon Salad - roasted chicken, egg, apples, manchego cheese and walnuts (S$19)

Berry had Grandpas Meatballs - parmesan buns, arugula and tomato sugo (S$15), an appetizer really, but was like a good size burger for Berry. She found this so cute!

Sunny & I both ordered Spruce's Signature Burger with homemade pickles and havarti cheese (S$17), arguably one of the best burgers I've tried here in Singapore. With a thick, juicy beef patty that is cooked to perfection.

Spruce has both indoor and outdoor seating, all together, a casual, quiet and breezy place to enjoy a leisurely brunch. It's just like dining at the patio of a friend's house. When the kids get bored, they can just head out to the playground where parents can watch over them from their tables. Best of all, when you go on a weekday, there are lots of seating with no wait at all.
