Singapore Eats: PS. Cafe at Dempsey Hill

Don't let this rusty signage fool you. There is nothing old, corroded or creaky about P.S. Cafe. If anything, this cafe is charming, cozy, casual and has basically become our go to place for brunch on a lazy weekend.

Whenever we are here, I always tell myself I am up for a new dish, but after repeated scans through the menu, I always end up copying Dada's order - our old faithful, THE PS. Brunch Burger ($29). It's huge, so juicy, and always hits the spot! I will have to say, this is the best burger in Singapore I have tried, hands down. The bacon & crispy onions contribute to alternating pops of flavor that add dimension to the perfectly grilled patty. I don't usually eat eggs, but propped on top of the bun, nestling the protein, it's a welcome treat!

Meanwhile, the PS. Fish & Chips ($28) is Berry's favorite. It's crunchy, tasty, fun and easy to eat! The perfect kiddie meal since it's not messy and the vegetable sticks add nutrition & color to the dish.

When my mom came to visit, we took her to brunch here of course. She got overwhelmed by the serving sizes passing by our table, so she ordered the Cheese & Caramelized Onion Quiche ($22). It's a light dish, portioned perfectly, so you won't over eat. The greens & fruit balance off the eggs & cheese so I'd say it's nothing to be guilty about.

I always say I would make room for dessert, and start off with great expectations, after seeing the dessert menu, but we often end up so full from our meal that we'd often pass.

Except for that one time that we had brunch with Sara, Bob & Peyton and we all dug into this delightful chocolate & marshmallow dessert, served with a side of vanilla ice cream that is just so "close your eyes & savor the goodness" kind of good! Some days, I catch myself dreaming of eating this. All by myself. No sharing. Ha!

Weekend Outfit

Our Saturday play date started at Go-Go Bambini on Dempsey Hill, where we met with our friends Sara, Bob and Peyton for an hour of going through tunnels, sliding down slides, and swimming in a pool of balls:

I couldn't resist diving into the pool with Berry, because when I was growing up, my mom didn't allow us to play in them. Because it was a pool of germs daw. Well, true, but at some point in time, it has to be done.

When Berry got hungry and started asking for a snack, we decided to rest for a bit, and then headed off to PS Cafe, our current favorite place for brunch. Berry had fish & chips. She loves this. PS Cafe's burgers are so good too. Dada & I are burger people, and this could even be better than that of Spruce's. Will do a more detailed post on PS Cafe soon!

By the time we were done with brunch, Berry changed into a new outfit na. Oh, and I also got to wear my new shoes from Renegade Folk. They sent me the pair I blogged about, so happy! Thank you Bibai! The leather is really soft, and I love the tassels.

Dada also brought the Vita Fede bangle I bought from AVA.ph! It's so pretty (see photo above). Actually, Dada brought a lot of the stuff I had Johnny Air-ed from the US, plus gifts sent to their house in Manila, so it felt like Christmas in summer! Will share them with you soon. 

In the meantime, thank you also to Sassa Swimwear for the swimsuit you sent me, and Anne of Bop Baby Bop for the adorable clips and headbands you sent Berry. We got it na! She was so excited, she tore off the gift wrap before I could even take a photo =)

Singapore Eats: Jones the Grocer

Susan, a reader, asked me about good places to eat in Singapore. I've told y'all about Artichoke, for this week, let's go to Jones the Grocer:

My friend Naomi brought Berry & I to Dempsey Hill sometime back, so we could eat at Jones the Grocer - an Australian food emporium that has a presence here in Singapore as well as in the United Arab Emirates. They are known as a market leader in gourmet foods, and is sort of like Santi's in the Philippines, just a lot bigger.

She had good things to say about the place, and being a serial bruncher, I trusted her taste. Upon steppping in, I immediately liked the bright, open feel of the cafe/grocery. Seating is communal as most tables can fit up to ten people. But that should be a plus for big groups. The ambiance is casual. Overall, it's a nice place to take a leisurely meal with friends. The expat community seems to like this place.

The food is tasty and fresh, now if only I can remember what we ordered, heehee:

Being a grocer after all, an upscale grocer at that, Jones also sells wines and flat breads:

A wide selection of olives:

Freshly baked bread:

Smoked and cured meat:

Plus a variety of gourmet delicacies - from sauces, olive oils, truffle salts, coffee beans, tea blends to handmade pasta, snacks and dips:

There is also a walk-in cheese room, basically a temperature controlled room dedicated solely to stocking cheese:

Plus a selection of cookbooks, which are ideal gifts to pack with the gourmet treats, for the consummate foodie:

Across the parking lot, I saw this wall that had portions covered up with planks from old wine crates. It actually doesn't look bad no? Imagine if wine importers in the Philippines can just donate the wood from old wine carts to shanty owners? That wouldn't look too shabby.
