Ten Things You Should Know About TICKLES

Back during my time, when you're a student with a limited budget, Tickles was the place to go to for retail therapy. It was not uncommon for my friends and I to head out to Tickles to pick up a stuffed flower (it's a flower made out of stuffed toy material heehee), stationery, or whatever fun, unnecessary tchotchke they had in store.

So when Tickles finally opened their 80 sqm circus-themed flagship store in Megamall this month, it wasn't a suprise at all that my mom friends all suddenly had Tickles on their Instagram feed. It was the original wasteland of our youth. In case you don't know what I'm talking about, which I doubt, here are ten fun facts about one of my favorite stores in the 90s.

1. Tickles brings out the feel good vibes.

“It seems that a lot of people are rooting for Tickles, because it’s a homegrown brand that carries a lot of fond memories,” says Carlo Tanseco, Creative Director of Tickles.

True enough, the site of a boarded up store in Megamall with the Tickles logo on it was enough to send me spiralling back to memory lane, back when I was in high school and my friends and I would visit the store in Greenhills and come out with stuff we don't really need but had to have because they were so cute!

2. It's steeped in history and the founder's love for retail.

For my millennial readers who are not familiar with Tickles, you're gonna love the heritage and history behind it.

Tickles was established in 1979 by Yoya Tanseco, Carlo’s mom, who is still its chairman, chief visionary and master shopper. A creative soul, intrepid businesswoman, and social butterfly rolled into one, Yoya dove into several successful business ventures before finding her true niche in retail.

“From dressmaking and designing wedding gowns, to catering and making cakes for children’s parties, name it, I’ve done it! I’m the type who can’t sit still,” recounts Yoya. “But ever since childhood, I’ve always loved retail. When we would make bahay-bahayan, I would be the treasurer and the purchaser. Mahilig ako sa kaha and purchasing.“

And so together with her sister and a good friend, Yoya she set up the very first Tickles in Shoppesville, Greenhills, stocking it with all sorts of cute gift items and adorable finds from travels to New York and Japan. “That was the time Hello Kitty was popular, and all the ballpens were so cute. In school, yan ang weakness ko—notebooks, ballpens… And so I enjoyed shopping for Tickles so much kasi ‘cutie-cutie.’” Everything she picked out would fly off the shelves, and she realized she was able to turn her love for shopping and travel into something that brought happiness to others.

Soon, the store was no longer just a hobby, and when her sister and friend migrated abroad, she ran the store on her own. Later on, she enlisted the help of her children (and eventually, Chun-chi Soler, Chief Operating Officer) to help with the store’s expansion.

3. It's a bounce back from the ashes (or in this case, basics) sort of story.

Branching out from the original shop in Greenhills, Tickles set up stores in Shangri-La Plaza, Robinsons Manila, Glorietta, and Alabang Town Center in the 1990s. However, with a struggling economy and the kids busy with other ventures, the stores dwindled to one branch in Glorietta. Even the goods on display were a sign of the times: “Everything was just very basic and functional,” shares Carlo. “But we didn’t want my mom’s dream to die; the brand was still strong, and so with Chun-chi’s help, we focused on reviving the store.”

Fast-forward to today: Tickles is back and bigger than ever, now with 11 stores across the metro.

4. It's worth checking out their sister stores: a'postrophe and ROY & BIV.

Tickles has also spun off into two other concept stores: a’postrophe, featuring more “grown-up” fashion and lifestyle items, and the bright and cheery ROY & BIV, where quirky gift items are categorized into the colors of the rainbow. Tickles, a’postrophe, and ROY & BIV also all carry the sub-brand Elemenopy (“Made from 100% genuine letter,” Chun-chi quips), which creates a distinct line of monogram- and letter-inspired merchandise for each of the brands.

5. It continues to be the go-to place for fun, gifts and novelties

From your go-to gift shop for special occasions, Tickles has evolved into a novelty shop for all seasons—and generations. “The line is more curated, and yet now appeals to different markets,” says Carlo.

6. Most of their products are original designs.

In their effort to offer unique items you can’t find anywhere else, the Tickles team now designs their own products, and also collaborates with other brands. Which shouldn't come as a surprise because I remember my former officemate Sabs Cacho once told me that Carlo has an impressive background in industrial design.

“Now, most of the items in the store are proprietary, which means we make it ourselves. Some of the items are still sourced, or made exclusively for us by international suppliers, but our focus is to design our own items. Our goal is to be 100% Tickles-branded,” Carlo reveals. “We also try to find the best sources to make our items affordable,” adds Chun-chi.

7. They will keep evolving, and moving on to next big hit.

In a market where nothing stays original for long, the team’s challenge is to come up with items that will tickle the fancy of their customers before anyone else. “We always think, what can we offer that is unique, that is not out there yet?” shares Carlo. “It’s inevitable that people will copy our items; it happens. But my perspective is to keep moving forward, design more, be ahead of the trend.”

8. Expect something fresh and new each visit.

New items are introduced every week, so there’s always something fresh to discover at the store. At the heart of everything they source or create for Tickles is the mission to bring “Happiness All Year Round.”

9. Tickles knows what we want.

From all-time favorite cute Japanese pens and notebooks with humorous sayings, to this season’s bestselling eye masks and food-inspired plushies, the Tickles team lead by Yoya Tanseco seems to know exactly the “kiliti” of Pinoys—perhaps the secret to why they’ve outlasted local and foreign competitors alike.

10. Heritage, forward thinking and a desire to keep it's customers happy is the key.

“I’d like to think that it’s the memory attached to the brand, and the feel-good items in the store, that have made us last all these years,” shares Carlo. “We’re just here to put smiles on their faces.”

Tickles is located at Glorietta 4, Greenbelt 1, Power Plant Mall, SM Megamall A, TriNoma, UP Town Center, Alabang Town Center, Market! Market!, Marquee Mall, Fairview Terraces, and Ayala Center Cebu. Follow @tickles_PH on Twitter and Instagram, or visit Tickles_ph on Facebook.

Why I Love Staub + Tip: It's The Perfect Wedding Gift

"Hello, I'm Julia Child. Welcome to The French Chef, and the first show on our series on French cooking. Today we're gonna make boeuf bourguignon, beef stew in red wine."

I can listen to Julia Child in her distinct Julia Child voice say that over and over. Boeuf bourgignon. Boeuf bourgignonBouef borgignon.

I do love a good beef stew myself. And now I realize why I also love Dutch ovens aka cocottes. They make me feel a bit like Julia Child. Standing in front of a stove, watching over a simmering stew.

Wouldn't it be fun to cook beef stew in a cow-shaped pot? Heehee.

While Julia Child didn't use a Staub for her first episode on beouf bourgignon, because Staub first came to the scene only in 1974, I am pretty sure she would have approved. It's perfect for one pot dishes and simply a dream to have in the kitchen.

Lately, I have been harboring my French cooking dreams via Staub's gorgeous, gorgeous cookware. I've been going back to Kitchen Pro since I first stepped foot in the store back in May, I'm always thinking of an excuse to ogle and think of getting a pot or knife for our kitchen. After all, most of my kitchen stuff I've had since I got married, and have been used and abused for the last 9 years.

But let's focus on the Staub cast iron pots first. Here's why I've fallen in love with them:

1. Won't you take a look at these deep, delightful colors?

The deep, intense and yet shiny coloring is made possible via a special color finish or coating unique to Staub called majolique. Watch at 1:35.

Oh, but if basic black or white cocottes are more your thing, there is too.

Won't this make a beautiful wedding gift? Perfect for the June Bride. Or any bride for that matter. Or any cooking enthusiast and aesthete actually. If anybody wants to gift me more Staub, I'm happy to accept hehe.

But that's not only why Staub pots are special. For starters, well-designed cookware is essential to successful cooking. Once you've seen the difference, you will understand. Not all kalderos are made the same, trust me. With Staub, there's plenty of substance behind the slick surface.

Let's move on to...

2. This French-made enameled cast iron pot retains heat well. You don't need to cook at high heat, there's no need for that. Medium high is ok. At that point, it also cooks evenly. No overcooked sections in your dish with this, promise.

3.  The black matte enameled interior is the best surface for browning and braising effect. Chefs promise an even sear and when used for stews, expect the most tender meat and flavorful sauces. You wanna know why? Because...

4.  To complement the enameled interior and heavy lid, the basting spikes under the lid allow steam to condense on the lid and evenly rain back, onto food, yielding moist, tender and flavorful results.

In laymen's terms, these dimples capture moisture from cooking and deflects it back at the meat making it extra great for braising and self-basting. When you cook in a cocotte, it is not uncommon to find meat so tender, it is barely holding itself together. I'm talking fall-off-the-bone goodness. Whether that be chicken, beef or lamb shanks.

5. You can use it from stove top (yes even on an induction stove), to oven, to table top. Which means, less pots to wash! Isn't that just perfect?

Bottomline is, if you can only have one pot in your kitchen, make it a Staub. Watch this for a full appreciation:

Although you may want to add a wok too. Yes, Staub makes woks and I just got one for Mother's Day. I've always wanted a wok for stir frying ala Wok with Yan ever since I was a kid, and now I have one. Dream come true!

My next planned purchase will be a one of those big cocottes to replace my old Le Creuset #26 whose bottom enamel has dulled, but I can't decide between a black or gray just yet.

Next on my wishlist are these mini cocottes. Not an essential as of now, but nice to have. Xavi thinks it's perfect for their play kitchen though.

Cute nga naman.

Staub makes tea pots too! It's so chica. I'll see if I can convince Dada that we need this. Or maybe I can just get one for him for Father's Day!

I don't know if KitchenPro has a wedding or gift registry just yet, but I think they should. This would make shopping for gifts so much easier.

One store pa lang and from the Staub selection pa lang, I see so many things any bride, groom, mom or dad would like. It would make a great housewarming present too, even for singles who have just moved into their first home.

Actually, why wait for an occasion to buy for ourselves? Let's put it this way. If we are willing to invest on shoes and bags, there's no excuse to scrimp on kaldero. It's for food that goes to our tummies, and that enough makes it totally worth it!

UPDATE: This is one good reason to shop now, offer ends June 30, 2016.

MFO Gift Guide: Trollbeads, Every Story Has a Bead

I may be a minimalist at heart, but when faced with a compelling concept, I throw that aesthetic out the window. Heehee.

Take for instance my current fascination with Danish jewelry brand Trollbeads, whose founders started the original but then novel “bead on bracelet” concept 40 years ago, in 1976 (same age as me!).

I would often pass by their store in Glorietta, but it was only until I stepped inside their shop in Robinsons Magnolia did I realize how easy it was to spend an hour inside the store, looking at their silver, glass and stone beads, and choosing a set that would tell the story of my life.

Because yes, that’s what Trollbeads is all about. With over 500 beads in their vast collection, every story has a bead, and as with our own personal stories, each bead is highly meaningful and inspirational.

They have Family themed beads, Love beads, Spirituality beads, Chakra beads and yes, even Travel beads.

Love & Family beads

Spirituality – spot the rosary bead!

Travel – USA, Germany and Italy themed beads. Add a bead to your collection, each time you visit a new country.

Each season, they come up with a new collection, and for Spring 2016, the theme is  “Uplifting”, with a selection of glass and silver beads that are covetable as they are collectible.

A montage of pieces from the the Uplifting Collection, a reminder that we have the power to find inner peace, and be an inspiration to others

The highlight of this collection are 3 Precious Beads: Fragile Purity, Honest Love and Healing Heart. All three are sparkling glass beads embedded with 13 cubic zirconia stones in pastel shades of pink, green and blue. The pink and blue are particularly very Pantone Color of the Year appropriate.

As with all Trollbeads beads, you may wear them as a single bead on a chain, stack them up…

from L to R: Fragile Purity, Honest Love and Healing Heart

...or string them together in one bracelet or bangle with other beads, to create a story that is meaningful to you.

Meanwhile, new Spring 2016 designs for the silver beads are Soft Wind of Change, which also comes as a pendant for their new Changeable Fantasy Necklace.

Yin Yang Floating, a reminder that life is made up of day and night, inhaling and exhaling, tension and relaxation and this bead unites these pulses into one.

And the Heaven Crane family, said to be the link between heaven and earth, a beautiful messenger and a symbol of freedom and longevity.

The Spring 2016 Collection is now available in stores, but you also might want to consider coming back for their Valentine 2016 bead ring, out in stores by February 1, 2016. Since you know, Valentine’s Day is just right around the corner. *winkwink*

Valentine bead ring for 2016

It’s a bead, on a ring. You may even string the bead on a bangle or necklace. So versatile!

Here’s a gift giving tip from MFO though. If you really want to give something truly special, give a themed one na! Like this “Family” bangle I put together with the help of the girls at Trollbeads Robinsons Magnolia and Joy Dauz, the Brand Manager of Trollbeads herself. How lucky no?

My “Family” of Trollbeads, which goes so well with my existing accessories, from L to R: Fireworks, Malachite, Double Heart, Hessonite Garnet and Fireworks again

Here’s what each bead in my bangle means:

The silver Fireworks beads which flank each end of the bangle, before the stoppers, are a fitting reminder that every end has a new beginning. I also like to think Fireworks means celebration, and warding off negativity.

I added the green stone, a Malachite, because not only does it bring balance in relationships – which is key to a family, it is also said to be a strong protector of children and travelers. Para when we travel, diba?

I chose the Double Heart to be placed in the center, to stand for me and Dada. Because I believe the most important relationship in the family is between husband and wife, and having stable and solid parents set the tone for the family and practically guarantees that the kids are happy and secure.

The brown stone, a Hessonite Garnet is again for protection and meant to bring luck in friendships and our journey in life.

Thank you Joy for helping me put together my first ever Trollbeads bangle!

I love it! Every time I look at my bangle, I am reminded of Dada and our three kids. I think: luck, love, and protection. Happy, positive thoughts. Which is just the sort of emotion you’d want to get out of someone you give Trollbeads to. Now that in my book, is a winning gift!

About Trollbeads:

Trollbeads is an exquisite set of personalized jewelry – a concept that allows consumers to mix and match, be creative and feel the magic, allowing them to reflect on life by glancing down on the beads and all that they symbolize.

Trollbeads isn’t just a jewelry brand – it is a unique lifestyle, a precious investment that increases in emotional and financial value as the collection grows. Trollbeads is like the rebellious, yet clearly loved relative who captivates us with unpredictable stories, who provokes smiles, fuels our imagination and takes us on unexpected journeys.

Each piece in the Trollbeads collection has its own story and personality, having taken inspiration from mythology, astrology, fairy tales, fauna, flora, cultural diversity and the familiar things of everyday life crafted in finest jewelry materials.

As with all Trollbeads products, the customer has the freedom to be your own designer, collecting a bead for every milestone in your life. Trollbeads is both for men and women, allowing them the opportunity to tell their own stories by combining beads on bracelets, necklaces and earrings. The combination is entirely up to you, so it is possible to compose a piece of jewelry in a style that matches your clothes, personality and precious memories.

In the Philippines, Trollbeads is available at Trollbeads Robinsons Magnolia, Glorietta, Mall of Asia and Ayala Center Cebu.

Christmas 2015 Gift Guide: MAGFORMERS

Just when I was like, "Mom, don't buy the kids toys na. They have too many.", I soon found myself retracting that statement. Because we want Magformers. Lots of it!

My friend Kath Cham introduced me to her friend Jaimee Frondoso, who is the official distributor of Magformers in the Philippines. We invited some of my mommy blogger friends to join us for breakfast, and over Angel's Kitchen champorado, Angus beef tapa and longganisa, we got to play with Magformers, an award winning magnetic construction toy from Korea that is one of the highly rated toys on Amazon. It was too much fun.

While everyone was eating, I found myself transfixed by this video looping on Jaimee's laptop.

She happened to have stacks of Magformers on the table, and as we chatted, I found myself playing with them.

I started off with a simple tower:

Attempted to make a star:

And then Jaimee joined in and we ended up with all these to fill one table!

She even showed us how to make this fox!

Then we got ambitious. We started building cars. Jaimee said they also have Transform Sets. Mechanized sets for the bigger kids, where they can build moving cars, robots, tanks, planes, helicopters and such, learning about engineering concepts while at it.

I was sold. Sold. Sold. Sold. If I was entertained by Magformers, how much more the kids? This was waaaaay better than having them occupied by an iPad. After all not only are Magformers entertaining, they're educational too - great for enhancing a child's creativity and brain development.

Plus, they come in the prettiest pastel shades too, like this Inspire Set.

For the girly girls, the ultimate would be the Princess Set. You and your little girl can make a castle, a crown, a sceptre, even a unicorn! I am in love. Want. Need. For me! I mean, Berry. Haha.

Seriously though, Magformers may just be the solution to getting rid of the iPad on your dinner table, once and for all. My friend Kath already swears by it, and I've seen it for myself.

ATTN: Grandparents and Godparents. Hint. Hint. Gift idea. The kids NEED this. Haha.

Buy Magformers at Rustans Makati and Shangri-la and Toys r Us Trinoma. For updates, visit the Magformers Philippines Facebook page, and follow @magformersph on Instagram.

10 Years of Holidays with Debenhams

Debenhams has been in the Philippines for a good solid 10 years, and a decade later, it's still a great source for many great, good quality finds for clothing, household and gifts.

If you're often looking for something nice to wear, visit Debenhams in Shangri-la Plaza Mall or Estancia at Capitol Commons for clothes we can wear this holiday season:

They also have plenty of everyday pieces for work:

And pretty tops such as this one, that we can wear pretty much to whatever occasion.

My mom has clothes that are over 15 years old by Principles at Debenhams, and they still look great today. They're not just well made, they're closet classics too.

The same goes for their sleepwear. You can wear these for years!

I forget that the kids section at Debenhams are fun to shop at. Must remember this!

My friend Dennis, who has a gorgeous apartment in the St. Francis Shangri-la Place tells me he finds a lot of chic home pieces in the home section of Debenhams.

True enough, I stumbled upon these ornaments in the home section, that together, will adorn one very chic tree.

These makes me want to overhaul our Christmas tree!

My top picks? A graceful ballerina that Berry will love, for Php395.

Glitter edged goblets.

Fun and fancy drop crystals. I waaaaant!

If you think Marks & Spencer is the only reliable resource for decent underwear, let's not forget Debenhams. The selection here is comparable in terms of price, range and quality.

They have shape wear as well. To hide our holiday bulges, dears, heehee.

As well as slips and half slips! For some reason, my sisters and friends say it's hard to find slips and half slips na daw, but Debenhams has a lot. File this info away!

Their swimwear section has plenty of chic, tasteful swim wear, coverups and such as well.

If you're looking for fun, unique holiday gifts, here's a bright idea: Go to Debenhams!

They have a mix of cute and practical tchotchkes for your high school buddies, young nieces and nephews, teenage godchildren, your child's tutor, friendly neighbors, just about anyone really.

I've really only just skimmed the surface of what you can find at Debenhams, so I suggest you visit Debenhams stores in Shangri-la Plaza and Estancia to see more of their fantastic selection.

Oh, and Happy 10th Year Anniversary, Debenhams!
