SoMoms Gets Bigger and #BetterMe

I just wanted to share with you that our little group of Social Media Moms aka The SoMoms have grown to 25! We are now bigger and of course, better than ever!

We welcomed the new SoMoms + 1 SoDad via our first ever General Assembly at Wine Bar atop Cafe 1771 in Ortigas. I have never been to Wine Bar until then. It's a great place pala for small events and functions. Same yummy food as Cafe 1771, except that Wine Bar is more private, and perfect for big meetings and events such as showers, christenings and birthdays.

It was also a kickoff for our #BetterMe campaign, where we collectively agreed to use blogging and social media to become better versions of ourselves. Belly Blessed Fest 2013: A Festival for Expecting Moms

Calling all expecting moms and dads!

Celebrate the many joys of pregnancy with Belly Blessed Fest 2013! A three-day event dedicated to expectant moms, Belly Blessed Fest will be held from July 12 to 14, 2013 at the 2nd and 3rd Level Atrium of The Podium Mall in Pasig City. 

There’ll be exciting interactive stations to delight expectant moms and dads-to-be like the Pregnancy Portrait Booth sponsored by Little One’s Portraits, Clay Medallion Making Station, and a wishing wall where moms can write special messages to the miracle growing inside their wombs. 

Alongside the activity stations will be booths showcasing the latest mom and baby products and services in the market today at the 3rd level. Moms-to-be can also browse and shop for essentials at the mompreneur booths. There will also be products for toddlers and children, Crumbs and Grubs Lactation goodies and snacks for expectant and nursing moms. As part of the Mommy Mundo events' tradition, there will be raffle draws throughout the day. 

On July 13, Saturday, there will be an all-day program of informative talks and refreshing entertainment. Music and entertainment Gentle Universe and a belly dancing session with the Goddesses of Belly Dance by Jill Ngo will get moms-to-be gently grooving while various and informative talks like that of Rome Kanapi, Childbirth Education teacher to reveal some Labor and relaxation techniques while importance of Safe Sleep will be discussed by Halo Philippines. Protect your baby for life! Listen to Dra. Aurora Tajan of CordLife Philippines, and Teacher Jeannie Castillo of Kindermusik Mama, will help get them more ready for the big Delivery day. A Keepsake Journal Making by Namaste and Craft MNL might just encourage many of them to make one-of-a-kind keepsakes of their pregnancy.

Doll Making Workshop with Craft MNL & Dolldalita

This is a super overdue post but since making something by hand will never go out of style, I thought I'd share with you our doll making session with Mommy Jac of Dolldalita back in February, thanks to Craft MNL and Mommy Mundo. 

Yup! We did something similar to these Waldorf-inspired dolls above, which were all handmade by Mommy Jac.

That afternoon, Berry and Gabbie were in for an activity like no other - sewing, stuffing and seeing their handmade dolls come to life:

I really enjoyed sewing our doll. It was therapeutic. Plus, there's always something fulfilling about seeing an object Berry & I made with our own hands take shape into something as adorable as this. 

My next step is to make a dress. I'll ask Berry to design something, she's got great taste in clothes. I am sure she'll come up with a wonderful outfit idea.

PS - Did you know that Berry is about to start big school next year? She just celebrated her fourth birthday with her pre-school classmates last week, it was a Snow White party. I should share with you some of the highlights of her day. They had Snow White cupcakes, corn dogs, nuggets and ice cream. Oh! They had so much fun!

TORCH + Coach Pia On Family Dialogues

First things first, you might want to sign up the kiddos and teenyboppers to TORCH, Coach Pia's Leadership Development Program this summer. There are two batches scheduled: April 23-26 and May 7-10 so whichever works, this is worth signing up for.

Why? Well apart from the importance of character building and meeting like-minded peers, I think TORCH is a great way to prepare kids for the real world. I am a huge fan of Coach Pia and whenever I attend her parenting talks, I always find myself reviewing my notes and eager to take on the life lessons we discussed. It would be great to expose our kids to her wisdom as early as now.

If you haven't had the opportunity to know about Coach Pia, she is an author, relationship expert, certified life coach and CEO of The One CORE – the first and only success center in the Philippines that aims to help young individuals be the best they can be. I first learned about her through Kris aka OC Mom in Manila, and from them on, I've become a disciple, haha.

That being said, I have never missed a Coach Pia parenting session every time the opportunity arises.  She has taught me all I know about progressive parenting and while I am still admittedly a work in progress, I really make it a point to put to practice all that I learn from her.

Last month, the Mommy Mundo SoMoms (of which I am a part of) spent our Saturday morning with her to learn about Creating Structure for Dialogue.

In a nutshell, we discussed the importance of family communication, which let's face it, can still be a struggle amongst family members. I am sharing with you some of the highlights, because this could also help your family become closer through constant communication:

- Hold family meetings in neutral territory and to make it conducive to open dialogue, it is  recommended to do it in an open space, where there are not physical barriers such as tables and books.

- Make family meetings a regular thing and to make plans and ideas come to fruition, go ahead and have a board or write down ideas, thoughts and plans so each member can help each other work towards individual and family goals.

- During times when we feel frustrated with a parent, partner, sibling or child, think of what it is about him/her that inspires you and use that to look at that person in a favorable, non-judgmental light during times of frustration and confusion. Sometimes we get fixated with the negative that we fail to see the positive qualities of a person.

- Think of who in the family we can confide in and reflect on how comfortable we are in communicating with each one. Remember that your orbit of closeness changes through time and someone you felt alienated from before could be the person you are closest to now and vice versa. Don't beat yourself up if there is estrangement in the family, it happens.

- The leader of the family, not necessarily a parent, but someone who plays the parental role and his/her energy sets the tone for everyone. Their level of self-mastery is also crucial in leading the family.

A Pledge to PLAY: A Disease Awareness Campaign

Late last month, Berry and I, along with the rest of the SoMoms were invited by Janice Villanueva aka Mommy Mundo to Protection, Love, and Activities for Young Kids or P.L.A.Y. - a disease awareness raising campaign at The Fun Ranch in Ortigas.

While I make sure that the kiddos vaccination schedules are followed to the letter, because hello, health is wealth, I thought it was still worth our time to learn more about vaccinations. I mean, I don't really even question our pedia as to why we have to have them done, it always is just a given that it has to be done. I saw my mom meticulously looking at our immunization charts growing up, so taking my cue from her, I make sure I do the same for Berry and Xavi.

So it was with rapt attention that I listened to pediatrician Dra. Carmina delos Reyes' talk about preventable diseases via vaccination.

Thankfully, Berry and her friends Gabbie, Reese and Anika were kept busy with their own activities, because it allowed me to really take in the lecture. And it was OMG. Did you know that each year, roughly a million children die from Pneumococcal Diseases or PDs?  Pneumococcal diseases include invasive ones also known as IPD such as meningitis, sepsis, bacteremia, and pneumonia, and other common diseases such as acute otitis media.

PD is considered as the #1 killer of children less than 5 years of age worldwide, pneumonia in fact kills 37 Filipino kids each day! Meanwhile Acute Otitis Media (AOM), more commonly known as an infection of the middle ear, causes twenty million doctor visits annually. As a mom, I find these statistics horrendous, because these diseases are actually preventable through vaccination. 

I can just imagine the stress of having your kid sick with colds, so imagine the intensity when it's something serious, even life threatening. Now imagine how horrible it would feel if you knew you could have done something to prevent that from happening.

I don't mean to be a downer, but this is serious stuff that us parents shouldn't take for granted. When it comes to our health, it's always better to be proactive than reactive. Here's to a safe and fun summer for everyone!

Meet The SoMoms + A Giveaway!

Let me tell you how I stumbled into blogging and how MFO has evolved. 

Yes, "the evolution of MFO" as my friend Karrots would say.

It really wasn't a deliberate thing. I studied Business Economics in UP, then I took up my MBA in AIM. My business background led me to corporate careers - I started out as analyst for an investment bank, then found myself doing merchandising for Starbucks (yes, I bought those Starbucks tumblers and mugs you collect, and rolled out all the seasonal marketing collaterals to stores, fun stuff). After my MBA, I went back to banking, doing marketing for Citibank. 

It was while I was in banking that I started blogging in 2006, as a way to kill time because Dada was studying abroad in Harvard and I would patiently wait for him to wake up so we could talk on Skype. It was also a creative outlet and a way to document my wish lists and anything that caught my fancy. 

What started as a mishmash of a blog filled with fashion related topics ranging from clothes, shoes, shopping, travel tips and industry news I was keeping tabs on, has grown into a full on lifestyle blog with my move to the US to join Dada who started working for a law firm in NYC in 2007. The blog took on another dimension when I became a mom to our two adorable babies, Berry and Xavi.

Today, apart from writing about my love for fashion, shopping and spreading word about the need to cultivate one's personal style, I also share my musings on motherhood and parenting, as well as baby, pregnancy and mommy friendly products. And my readers, as it turns out, also grew along with me! They eventually got engaged, married and found themselves with kids of their own. 

When we moved back here from Singapore last December, I was gone a total of 4 years. I was afraid that my friends have been so used to not having me around that I would have a dismal social life. But on the contrary! My childhood friends were so happy to have us back in town. Not only that, I gained a new set of friends, my mommy blogger friends who I finally could meet over coffee or lunch, after having only exchanged messages with online or via email back when were still living abroad.

But I guess what brings us all together is our desire to be better moms, and to not lose ourselves in the process. We are still fun, interesting individuals who are also devoted to our families. In SoMoms parlance: 

We are a collective of moms who are active on social media and have unique voices and points of view that are relevant to moms like us.
